JOHN DOHERTY: a.k.a. shaft
Of Irish descent, John completed his Engineering degree in 2002. A spectacular result in his final exams, particularly CIVL3225 (Concrete Structures: Behaviour), set him up for a great job photographing cracks in Kings Cross (make of that what you will).
He now works too much, but always finds time for his family - and when he has time he will talk to his biological relatives too.
Our bold reporter managed to catch up with John just last week and asked a few questions to get an insight into the man that is our Club Captain...
Where were you born?
In the town of Guiness, Ireland. Actually, did I say town? I meant brewery...
Greatest highlight of playing for Sydney Uni?
Getting to the Final of Sydney Championships with the Mixed Open in 2003.
Most memorable off-field moment?
Most definitely my date with Trish and the boys. It was one of those days you'll never forget - a romantic trip to the movies (with the boys tagging along) and grabbing a bite to eat (with the boys tagging along again). Like all first dates, it was certainly memorable.
How do you relax off the field?
My work is my release, and thats why I spend so much time there. If ever I need cheering up, I just make sure someone who doesn't really know how to operate a backhoe goes a little bit too close to a gas line or some Telstra cabling - so far we've managed to knock out the majority of the Eastern suburbs, I want to see if I can affect crim's house from the Cross!
I'm also impartial to a good massage - I spend more on massages each year than some third world nations spend on contraception. Having said that, most men in third world nations would spend more on contraception in a year than I do.
What do you consider is your best quality?
One word - Jig.
What book are you reading at the moment?
Now that I don't have the ute and I'm catching the train to work, I've been reading a beauty called "How to piss away $1000 every week" by Jerrold Mundis. But before that I was reading "Picking Up For Dummies" by Kevin Knox & Julie Sheldon Huffaker... don't bother.
