60 Seconds in touch

UPCOMING TECHNICAL COURSES

In June, the NSW Touch Association will be conducting a series of courses, including Level 1 & 2 Coaching, Level 1 Selecting, and Level 2 & 3 Refereeing courses.

If you are interested in attending any of these, please contact the appropriate person listed below.

REFERESS REQUIRED FOR ECC

The East Coast Challenge needs referees, and will pay $100 per day for your services.  The event is run from 9am-4pm over the period Monday 7th - Wednesday 9th July at Meadowbank (near Ryde), however if you can't make the whole event just indicate which days you can.

If you are interested in being involved, please contact Andrew Lees at NSW Touch.

LEVEL 1 COACHING COURSE

NSWTA are conducting a Level 1 Coaching Course at Bankstown Sports Club, on Sunday 15th June 2008.

LEVEL 1 COACHING COURSE

NSWTA are conducting a level 1 coaching course on Saturday 2nd November. It will be run from 9am that day and will take place at Tempe Velodrome. The course costs $90 but a Sydney University touch club member that participates in this course is eligible for a substantial rebate.

Contact Andrew Lees for more details or check out the NSW Touch Association website.

LEVELS 1, 2 & 3 REFEREE COURSE

NSWTA are running Level 1, 2 & 3 Referee Courses on Saturday 3rd February at Penrith Touch Fields.

The cost of the course is $25 and that includes registration plus refreshments. It's a small price to pay when you consider that you can make that money back by refereeing only two park games in our competition.

Refereeing is a great way to keep fit and earn a bit of cash on the side, which most Uni students won't ever complain about.

If interested email Victa for more information.

STATE CUP TRAINING

Following on from our combined university teams playing in the Vawdon Cup, we will be entering teams into the NSWTA State Cup, which takes place from the 1st to the 3rd of December in Port Macquarie.

Training commences:

When: Tuesday 17th October
Time: 7pm
Where: Macquarie University Sports Fields

Whilst we will be entering both Mens and Womens teams (hopefully under the banner of Varsity) there is also the opportunity to enter a third team if enough interest is expressed.

NSWTA MOVE FROM U/23 BACK TO U/20

The Board of the NSWTA have agreed to remove the U/23's division and revert to the U/20's division from the 2006 State Cup. Further to this NSWTA has agreed to introduce a 2nd Division in Men's and Women's Open at the 2006 State Cup.

This is good news for the current "Varsity" teams as it allows them to stay together and participate in a competition not restricted by aged based divisions.

The NSW State Cup will once again be held in Port Macquarie from the 1st-3rd December. Trials and selections will take place in mid October, soon after the conclusion of Vawdon Cup.

LEVEL ONE COACHING COURSE

NSWTA will be conducting a Level 1 Coaching Course on Saturday, 23rd September, 2006 at the NSWTA Office at Tempe.

Any interested individuals will need to register by September 14th to allow sufficient time to supply course material. The cost will be $95 including lunch and drinks on the day, however this cost will be subsidised for club members.

Interested people are to contact NSWTA on 1800 640 668 or email yoni@touch.asn.au.

COACHING COURSE

NSWTA are looking to conduct a Level 1 Coaching Course in the near future. With all current NSWTA tournament conditions requiring Level 1 Accredited Coaches for all NSWTA Events it is encouraged that any interested coaches read on.

NSWTA would like to offer three possible dates for the course:

  • Sunday, 20th August,
  • Sunday, 17th September
  • Saturday, 23rd September

Any interested people are asked to contact yoni@touch.asn.au with details and what dates you prefer. The cost of the course is $95 however the club will be providing subsidies to any interested members.

VARSITY - LOOKING GOOD FOR 2006

Varsity is progressing well and is now facing the final hurdle (NSWTA) before it becomes official. All three touch clubs have accepted the concept at recent commitee meetings and the three sports unions involved have all agreed to provide support for the new entity.

As a result we will be holding several pre season sessions before 'official' training commences in mid-May. The first of these fitness sessions will take place on this Friday 19th May, 7pm at a soon to be determined venue.

Anyone interested in participating in some serious representative touch are asked to attend the pre season sessions. For more information email Victa.

VARSITY - A COMBINED UNIVERSITY FORCE

Sydney University, Macquarie University and UTS Touch clubs have been in consultation recently to develop a proposal for combined university teams to enter NSWTA events such as the Vawdon Cup and State Cup.

The combined effort, to be known as "Varsity" would still allow for the fun and social competitions to continue and develop within each respective University, but would allow for a combined force to enter into representative competitions.

The executive of Sydney University Touch Club will be meeting on Monday 8th May to vote on the proposal and it is asked that you voice any opinion with an executive member prior to this date. Email correspondence can be forwarded onto Yoni Charlupski.

TARA, BIZ, BOOGY & BURKEY NAMED IN STATE SQUADS

Congratulations must go out to the following Sydney University students that have been selected in the NSWTA State Squads.

  • Kate Baseley
  • Tara Prowse
  • Lauren Thorne
All three girls are all currently studying at Sydney University and are also competing in the clubs Monday Night Competition at Jubilee Oval.

STATE CUP TEAMS

The Sydney Uni State Cup teams have been in training for the last few weeks in preperation for their trip to Port Macquarie this December. Like last year, we will be sending a Mens U23 team and a Mixed Open team.

Good luck to both teams. Read on to view the team lists.

STATE CUP TRIALS

Sydney University Touch will be holding trials/training for it's NSW State Cup teams, that will compete in Port Macquarie from Friday 2nd December to Sunday 4th December.

With the Structure of the tournament different to that of the Vawdon Cup, we will be hoping to place teams in a number of the following categories:

  • Mens Open (No age limit)
  • Mixed Open (No age limit)
  • Mens 23 (born 1982-1991)
  • Womens 23 (born 1982-1991)

Please contact either Victa or Andrew Lees if you are interested but are unable to attend trials.

MAJOR CHANGES TO VAWDON CUP ANNOUNCED

NSW Touch have announced some major changes to their weekly representitive competition. The Vawdon Cup, previously known as the Sydney Championships, has been restructured from an age category based competition to a divisional one.

LEVEL 1 REFEREE COURSE

We are always in need of referees for our Monday night competition. If there is anybody within the club who is interested in undertaking a Level 1 Referees certificate, we will be conducting a course on Sunday 24th April at The Arena (near the Square on Main Campus) from 10am until about 3pm.

The cost of the course is normally $35, however the club will pay for up to 20 people to complete the course. Lunch will also be provided on the day.

To register, please contact Gary by phone on 0414 644 879 or email.

YASS - THE OTHER UNI GAMES

Once again we are sending teams down south to Yass for the annual Australia day knockout competition. If the last few years are anything to go by then expect, nudity, alcohol, projectile vomiting and a bit of touch in an action packed weekend.

LEVEL 1 COACHING COURSE

New South Wales Touch Association are conducting a Level 1 Coaching course on Saturday 13th November, 2004. Anybody who is interested in attending the course, please contact Gary Reynolds for more information.

SYDNEY CHAMPIONSHIPS TRIALS

We will be holding trials this Sunday (6th June) afternoon and Monday 14th June.

It is extremely close to the beginning of the Sydney Rep season, and we are a little late in getting the ball rolling. We want to field more teams in 2004 than we did last year, and hope to be able to field teams in the following divisions.

  • Mixed Open (no age requirement)
  • Men's Under 23 (born 1981 or after)
  • Women's Under 23 (born 1981 or after)
  • Men's Over 30 (born 1974 or before)

These teams will participate in both the Sydney Championships (16th July until 29th October) and the State Cup (3rd, 4th, 5th December).

KRISTEE ARKLE MAKES NSW SQUAD

Sydney University Mixed Open representitive Kristee Arkle has recently been named in the NSW squad for womens under 20's. Should she be selected for the team then she will participate in the 2004 State of Origin and Interstate Challenge Series on August 13/14 2004.

This is a great achievement for Kristee and we wish her the best of luck. Several other players from Sydney Uni were also named in the squads

FEZ MAKES HALL OF FAME

Sydney Uni have just returned from a successful State Cup tour. Whilst we just failed to make the playoffs, we did play some excellent Touch over the weekend and came home far from dissapointed.

We also saw the third Nude run in a row from Fez, which sees him enter the State Cup Nude Hall of Fame.

STATE CUP DRAW RELEASED

NSWTA have now released the 2003 State Cup draw - it is available from their website (follow the links Tournaments -> State Cup).

STATE CUP POOLS ANNOUNCED

The NSWTA today announced the revised pools for the State Cup in early December. Sydney University now appears in Pool D (see below for the Mixed pool listings).

AND THEN THERE WERE THREE...

In an excellent match last Friday night, Sydney University came out on top to progress into the Elimination Final of the 2003 Sydney Championships.

After throwing away a 2-0 lead to lose to Taren Point in the round game earlier in the season, the Lions were intent on winning back their pride against an opponent they knew they should have accounted for on their previous outing.

UNIVERSITY INTO THE FINAL FOUR

After being behind on the scoreboard early in the first half in their elimination final last night, the Sydney University outfit came back to defeat Wollongong in a tough encounter 4 touchdowns to 3 at Westmead.

All players did well to turn the deficit around and make their way into the top 4.

CONGRATS TO FOUR USYD LIONS

Yesterday NSW touch announced the City teams that are to play against NSW Country on September 12/13 2003. It is with much pride to say that Sydney University was lucky enough to have several of its own named in the city teams.

What exactly does that mean? Read on to find out.

OUR STATE CUP CAMPAIGN

Syney University sent an undermanned team to Port Macquarie for the annual State Cup competition run by NSWTA in 2001. This year we will have a stronger team and details of the team and accommodation are available by clicking on Read More below.

SYDNEY CHAMPS KICK OFF THIS WEEK!

The most prestigious weekly touch competition in NSW, if not Australia, is due to start this Friday night (2/8/02) and Sydney Uni touch is well represented.

The 'Wilma' Sydney Championships touch competition is run by the NSW Touch Association and attracts the cream of Sydney and NSW touch to play in a weekly competition, every Friday night.

TWO LIONS WHO WILL GIVE QLD THE BLUES

As some of you may already know, the SUSU and SUWSA have given scholarships to 2 of our members for their outstanding ability as Touch players.

Stephen Roberts and Louise Winchester will both be taking on QLD in June in the Touch State of Origin series, being played in Brisbane.
