BRUCE ROSS SUCCESSFUL IN SYDNEY UNI SPORT ELECTION
Incumbent President Mr Bruce Ross was re-elected as Sydney Uni Sport President on Monday 30th of April 2007. Ms Denise Wee was re-elected as Female Vice President, and Mr Charles Perry as Male Vice President.
President Bruce Ross stated that this was the most significant electoral challenge he had faced in his 16 years as President.
At such a critical time in the history of sport at the University his re-election was a resounding endorsement of his leadership in this period of time.
"The leader of the opposing team, Nikolas Kirby, is an experienced student politician who has been a Union Board Director, editor of Honi Soit, and is currently Secretary of the St Paul's College Student's Club. The policies of his group included a 'combined membership card' for the Union and Sydney Uni Sport and 'a month-long free period at the beginning of every year to encourage every student... to try a range of new sports without obligation.' They also insisted that 'Sydney Uni Sport must work its hardest for the smallest clubs.'"
"Implementation of such policies would have caused a drastic and fundamental reordering of priorities for sport at Sydney Uni," Ross said.
"I am gratified that by a more than 2-to-1 majority, Sydney Uni Sport members voted to retain the current leadership and the continuation of a system that has led to our University being recognised nationally and internationally as a great nursery for sporting talent."
"Our members have given us a mandate to continue to pursue sporting excellence. At the same time we are reminded that we need to do even more to provide competitive and recreational opportunities for all our members."
